WHO IS TUNISIA'S FIRST FEMALE PRIME MINISTER?
Najla Bouden Romdhane is the Prime Minister of Tunisia. She was born on 29 June 1958 in Kairouan. She is a geologist as well as a university professor of higher education at the National Engineering School of Tunis at Tunis El Manar University. She took office on 11 October 2021.
You might be wondering what is so special about this woman. Well, she is the first female Prime Minister in Tunisia and most surprisingly, the Arab world.
Before becoming Prime Minister, she held senior roles at the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Mme. Romdhane participated in a $70 million World Bank-funded programme dubbed "PromEssE". The programme serves as panacea to reform and modernise university education in Tunisia. Unemployment is a major social issue prevalent in the country and as such it would help alleviate the problem faced by Tunisian graduates.
Amidst the Tunisian political crisis in September last year, President Kais Saied requested Mme. Romdhane forms and lead a government. It will go down in history as the first time in Tunisia that a woman has assumed the role of Prime Minister. President Saied described the moment as "an honour to Tunisia and Tunisian women" during a meeting at the presidential palace. President Saied has affirmed with a firm will and determination to work together with Prime Minister Romdhane to combat corruption and chaos in many state institutions.
President Saied is expected to assume full executive powers whilst Prime Minister Romdhane executes her role with less direct authority than others before her.
